About

Authorship

I am a computer scientist in my mid 30s. I have been fascinated with computers since we acquired a Commodore 64 when I was 8. I’ve been fascinated by publishing since an even earlier age.

Concept

Digital Times is about life in the era of digital media and about my life. As digital media is related to publishing, art and literature, personal computing, and computer science, and other things, those topics also may appear from time to time. As my life is related to even more things, they may also be covered here from time to time.

Design

I wanted the design to be reminiscent of what was possible with desktop publishing on our trusty Commodore 64 in the ’80s (at least as I remember it), but also to exemplify the simplicity that was characteristic of digital documents prior to the mid-’90s (also as I remember it). I also wanted to provide a clean and functional design to fit my own preferences and beliefs about effective design.

The title design is intended to capture the feel of the banners my childhood newspapers had when I created them in Newsroom on the Commodore 64. The title text is set in the Diploma typeface from Fontennium. I used a bitmap image of the the title in 24 point and scaled it by 300% to capture how a black letter font of that size looks on the screen of the Commodore.
